Hintertux (Austria) Near the better known Mayrhofen, this is the Alps' best glacier: steeper in parts and far more extensive than its rivals. The Betterpark freestyle area opened on October 6, with a pro line, beginner line and, new this season, Austria's only Superpipe.
Alta (USA) The best of North America's November openers, this cult Utah resort - at the remote end of Little Cottonwood Canyon - has dry powder, challenging steep terrain in Baldy Chutes, and a real "early days of skiing" feel. (Snowboarding not allowed.)
Saas Fee (Šveits) One of the few remaining 12-month ski areas (many glaciers have stopped summer skiing), the attractive, car-free Swiss resort is lively year-round.
Tignes (Prantsusmaa) The 3,455m-high Grande Motte glacier, way above the yet-to-freeze, dammed lake, and reached by underground funicular, is already operational. The rest of the Espace Killy ski area opens on November 25, in time for Val d'Isère to host the Première Neige downhill race on December 9.
Cervinia (Itaalia) Zermatt's unfashionable, underrated, underpriced neighbour over the border is already open on weekends and goes seven-day on October 21. Founded by Mussolini, the town is not pretty but the wide high-altitude runs beneath the Matterhorn are perfect for a gentle start to the season.
